Week 8 - Christm--- wait. no. less. Christless. #2020 - Grace McCarney


We all know 2020 is a year for the books. I think we are feeling that especially now that the holiday season is upon us. I am not super religious but I do love celebrating Christmas. I'm not really mad that this Christmas will be different, because it has to be. It's essential that this holiday season is different. And we are all going through it, so we don't need to feel alone. It just sucks. It sucks that we can't go holiday shopping, or go to Disneyland, or go see all the amazing soon-to-be Oscar nominated movies that come out around this time. So, yesterday, I was feeling a little sad. Because it's supposed to feel like the start of the holiday season, but it's hard to feel that without seeing all the shops and places lit up. My partner and I went out to the park for a few hours and when we came back, his Dad had put the Christmas lights. I smiled immediately. It's not that many lights but it still felt at least a little bit like the holidays. There are the traditional lights and then also a fun GOBO type projection light on the walls. I think it's amazing though how lights alone can create this emotion. Sure, other decorations can, but there is something about lights in the holiday season. People compete over having the best holiday lights. I think lighting brings people together in these times, and right now, we need to take what we can get.

    Agreed! I love this part of the year for the lighting alone - such a celebration of emotions related to lighting - nice images and nice post :)

  I took this picture about 4 years ago during spring break of my senior year in high school. This is the beach in La Jolla. I'm from San Diego so I love going to the beach and have so many fond memories of La Jolla. This picture was taken about mid afternoon and it wasn't as bright and sunny as when I had first got there hours prior and thought it looked beautiful. Since the pandemic has started, I haven't visited the beach at all due to the crowds. As much as I love this picture, I can't help but feel sad to think about the fact that I took simple outings with friends for granted. During this time in quarantine, I've realized that I can't take moments with my loved ones for granted and cannot wait to be able to spend time with them in person.

Week 4 - L'arc en ciel - Grace McCarney

  While I'm visiting California for these few months I'm staying at my partner's parents' house. They have a chandelier in the front of the house that is next to a window. The window is facing west so during late afternoon/early evening everyday the light comes through and creates a stunning array of rainbows all throughout the second floor. This week they were especially bright and distinct. I also just learned how to say rainbow in french so that's what my title is. Whenever I see a rainbow like this, that appears somewhere I didn't expect it, it always brings a huge smile to my face. I know there's a science to it but it really feels magical. I think that is something that lighting does in theatre that not many other design forms can do. Depending on how it's lit and what is lit, it can truly make the stage feel magical. Week 10 - Plant Mom - Erica Batres

  This is a picture of my plants at around 4:30pm in the afternoon. The sun was not yet set, but it was definitely "golden hour" peaking through my bedroom window. I love the way the warm yellows from the sun brings out the warm earthy tones of the greens in the potted plants. Looking at all these colors together puts me in such a relaxing mood, and makes me so thankful that I have brought plants into my bedroom. There is a soft cascading yellow that makes this photo feel so warm and fresh to me. When I look at this picture I can feel the temperature of the room, slightly warm, but not stuffy.
