Week 2 - Mary Smith - Small Moments

My cat is the subject of most, if not all, the pictures on my phone. This particular picture was taken about two weeks after the pandemic had begun. So much was unknown and it was an incredibly scary time. I live alone and while I do have the ability to drive a couple of hours north and be home, it felt too risky at the time so I stayed at my apartment in Irvine. My cat, Sawyer, being my only companion. He had just woken up from a nap and the light was hitting his face in such a dramatic way, I thought it looked quite silly for a cat of his nature. He’s very playful, not so much the melodramatic type. It made me laugh and I posted it on Instagram hoping it might make someone else smile. It was the small moments like this that got me through that really big rough patch of time.

I’m sure we all have particular images, songs, or tv shows that will always be tied to that very specific time in our lives when everything we had known suddenly went out the door and we had to surrender to this virus. It’s a powerful feeling to be able to have those emotions come rushing back just at a glance of an image.

  1. I do love the lighting on your cat - he and the light seem so deliberate and "designed" :). So glad you are able to see the connection to the light and the image, it will serve you well in this class. Nice post!
